Act Now To Protect U.S. Coasts

Government reports warn policy makers and planners to act now to protect the infrastructure of the United States. From The New York Times article you read by Cornelia Dean called “Government Reports Warn Planners on Sea-Rise Threat to U.S. Coasts,” do you think the U.S. has done enough to protect its infrastructure? Use specific examples from the article to support your statement.

  1. Many people would think the United States has done enough to protect its infrastructures. I have numerous reasons to believe this. One reason i believe this is because natural disasters like hurricane Katrina have already severely damaged several infrastructures. Also, there have been a countless amount of reports on rising sea levels already, and if we do not take action, it can result in disastrous results. About 60,000 miles of coastal highways have been flooded. If this is already happening, just imagine what can happen in 20 or 30 years time. Although we are taking some action, like starting plans to move, reinforce, protect, or replace many infrastructures on safer ground, a great deal of people would believe we would have to do much more than that to prevent severe sea level rise.

  2. Several different types of infrastructures in the United States are threatened by sea level rise. An infrastructure is a basic structure or feature of a system that are needed for the functioning of country or area. Types of infrastructures include roads, rail lines, ports, and airports. The United States has not done enough to protect its infrastructures. 60,000 miles of coastal highways are already at risk of flooding. Even though the U.S. persists to protect, reinforce, and to to move or replace infrastructures- they have not done much about actually doing it. For instance, in the 2005 tragedies of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have caused life-changing events along coastal areas in the United States. Transportation planners say that the U.S. has "not looked far enough into the future" over what might happen ahead of time. Airports along the coastal regions in New York such as La Guardia Airport and Newark Liberty Airport are especially at risk. Sea level rise is a major issue that has to be taken action of- before it is too late.

  3. After reading the article "Government Reports Warm Planners on Sea-Rise Threat to US Coasts" many people conclude that the United States has not done enough to protect its infrastructure. An infrastructure is a basic structure of a a system that is needed for the functioning of an area. The United States has not done enough to protect its infrastructure because if the United States had done enough to protect its infrastructure than the government will not have to worry about protecting important coastal infrastructures now. For instance, 60,000 miles of coastal highways are vulnerable to sea level rise. Coastal roads, bridges, marine, air, and pipelines are vulnerable to sea level rise also. Even Long Island's coastal airports like Newark Liberty International Airport and La Guardia Airport are at risk.Only now has the government plan to protect, reinforce, move or replace these infrastructure. The United States did not do enough to protect its infrastructure because important coastal places that are thickly populated and economically important like Southern Florida are vulnerable and at great risk to sea-level rise. Scientists say that now, even a sea level rise of 2 feet will be an optimistic outcome. These are some reasons why the United States has not done enough to protect its infrastructure.

  4. No, the U.S. has not done enough to protect its infrastructure. One reason to support this statement, is that the U.S. are sending out warnings, but at the same time they are building beaches, wetlands and fresh-water supplies, which can be threatened by encroaching saltwater. Another reason for the statement, is that the U.S. is building coastal cities in tidal areas which can be washed away. A third reason is that, 60,000 miles of coastal highways are subject to flooding because they are by the water and also because they are not protected well enough. Lastly, to support the statement, some airports will even be affected because they are not being protected as well as they can be. Two of the airports would be La Guardian Airport and the Newark Liberty International Airport. This can all be saved and helped if the U.S. does more to protect its infrastructure.

  5. The US has done a lot to protect its infrastructure but it is still not enough. If they do not protect the infrastructures well enough the sea level rise can cause coastal floods. Protecting the infrastructures is very important and must be done. It is not helping because when people are being warned there are still people building roads, bridges and other things that can be affected by sea level rising. 60,000 coastal highways are already subject to coastal flooding. Many of the infrastructures are to close to the water and are vulnerable to floods such as La Guardia Airport. A way to save infrastructures is to reinforce and move it to a safer ground but that would take decades and billions of dollars. Protecting the infrastructures is very important and the US needs to give it some thought and protect the infrastructures.

  7. Many people would probably agree that the United States has done enough to protect its infrastructures. After many climate disasters like hurricane Katrina, which has been damaged many infrastructures. This tragic event should have gotten everyone aware about how much of an impact rising sea levels could have in us. About 60,000 miles of some coastal highways are being flooded now. This is only a small part of what rising sea levels could do to our planet. Now we are starting to protect many infrastructures onto safer grounds. We must take a stand to stop sea level rising now.

  8. In my opinion the United States has done almost enough to protect itself from sea level rising. For example, they already have protected themselves by protecting the airports that might be under water. They have not protected themselves from the noted two-foot rise of water in Florida by year 2100 by the Miami-Dade Country Climate Change Task Force. They did protect themselves by putting an opining and closing wall from the Long Island sound into New York city. The United States main area that they have to protect is beaches, wetlands, and fresh-water supplies. In conclusion, it will take 1-5 years until we are completely ready for sea level rising.

No,the United states has not done enough to protect the United States coasts. This is because many places in the United States is vulnerable. For example by the year 2100 South Florida will be in major danger. Also coastal highways are already subjected to flooding.they are recommend to protect roads, bridges, marine, air, piplines, everything. Many agencies say that in the next century sea level will rise about 16 in, 2ft, 3ft. At about 16 in they say the rate has been exceeded. At about 2ft an estimate many scientists regards are optomistic. Up to 3ft catosrophic for wetlands and other coastal features, less than high estimate suggested.the two airports are Newark and La Guardia. they would be vulnerable to sea level rise because they are on the coast. if the government really cared they would do something about these problems.

  10. The United States seems as if it has done enough to protect its infrastructure from sea levels rising, but that is not true. The coastal cities of the United States, such as New York are in grave danger. If the United States does not protect its infrastructure not only will many lives be lost, but the economy will be greatly affected. Many reports say that by 2100 the water will rise aproxiemetly two feet. Also 60,000 highways along the coast are also in danger because of floods. The United States should do more to protect its infrastructure.

  11. America's infrastructure and the infrastructures of different countries is at risk of sea level rise. The billion dollar roads, rail lines, naval ports, and airports are at risk of flooding caused by the melting of glaciers fueled by global warming. Over 60000 miles of American roads already experience periodic flooding. But no only dose sea level rise flood but causes ferocious storms. The hurricanes of Katrina and Rita have had disasterous effects on a place where hurricanes are a rather normal event. experts say that the conditoins will worsen on the next year.

  12. The U.S. has not done enough to protect its infrastructure. Sea level rise is still a huge threat to American citizens and the U.S. Government
Wetlands, airports, major highways and ports all over the U.S. are at risk of flooding and destruction. The government has done very little compared to what it could do if it put a good amount of effort into solving this catastrophic
    problem.

  13. The United States has not done enough to protect its infrastructure. Many people would agree with this statement for various reasons. Roads, rail line, ports and airports are at risk because of sea level rising. If we were not to o anything about 2,200 miles of roads in In Maryland, Virginia, and District of Columbia could be flooded. Also airports such as Newark Liberty International Airport and Laguardia Airport could be flooded. This is a serious problem that we have to work together to solve.

  14. The United States has in fact not done enough to protect are infrastructures. The U.S needs all of its infrastructures to be able to run smoothly. Some infrastructures that will be threatened by sea level rise are roads, rail lines, ports, and airports. Scientists believe that coastal flooding will have the largest affect on these different infrastructures. Also, about 60,000 miles of coastal highways are already being affected by the rising sea. Two major airports in the metropolitan area are built on tidal areas and are very vulnerable to flooding. These airports include Newark Liberty International Airport and La Guardia Airport. Transportation officials should include climate change, maintenance schedules, and emergency preparedness to their plans to protect the U.S infrastructures.

  15. The United States has done many things to protect their infrastructures but there are many other things the U.S can do to insure that their infrastructure will be secure. Sea level rise in coastal areas has been a threat to the infrastructures there. Flooding will be a main problem in coastal areas. A 2 foot rise in sea level could wipe out a large amount of infrastructure in many Mid Atlantic states such as Virgina and Maryland. Many miles of roads and rail lines that will cost a fortune to repair could be lost that is if the U.S can make some adjustments to these areas. Options for this problem can be to protect or reinforce the infrastructure or move or replace the infrastructure to safer ground. if the US can make more adjustments to these areas they should be out of harm's reach.

  20. America is at risk of rising sea levels. This could harm infrastructures such as roads, rail lines, ports, airport, etc. If we do not act now, many of these infrastructure could be destroyed and would take billions of dollars to fix. More than 60,000 miles of coastal highways are prone to flooding. We need to have people survey roads, bridges, marine, air, pipelines, and everything else that might be affected. We would have to either replace these structures or protect them which could cost billions of dollars and many years to do. Montauk Point, L.I. to Cape Lookout, N.C. are areas that could experience flooding because they are on the coast. If the sea level rises about 2ft, it would affect 70% of port property and 2,200 miles of major roads and about 900 miles of railroad tracks in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and the District of Columbia. In the Gulf Coast, our import facilities are in danger of getting the rising water. S. Jeffress Williams said that we might have to put protection on the coast to prevent flooding in large areas. If we do not act now, this problem will not get solved in time.

The problem is growing and soon it will be to large to solve.

  28. The U.S. has tried to help protect the many infrastructures because of global warming, but i do not think that they have done enough. For example, America's roads, rail lines, ports and airports are all terribly threatened by global warming. Also, there is a lot of coastal flooding in America that people need to be paying more attention to. 60,000 miles of coastal highways are already subject to periodic flooding. Another example is airports in America. Dr. Schwartz says " Newark Liberty International Airport and La Guardia Airport are especially at risk." This is because large coastal cities are built in tidal areas, often on fill which make airports particularly vulnerable. Airports are not the only places in danger obviously but also places like beaches, wetlands and fresh-water supplies are all being threatened by sea level rising. Lastly, scientists are predicting that by 2100, sea level rising will become even worst and they already have three predictions for it. So my thought is, that the U.S. isn't doing enough to protect us from sea level rising. Global warming is something that is extremely dangerous and causes our world to fall apart in places because of sea level rising, climate change and all different varieties of situations. This is why we need to help protect our planet before it's gone.

  29. The United States has not done enough to protect its infrastructure. Even though it has many different agencies such as the National Research Council and the Envirnmental Protection Agency doing various studies, they have not taken enough action against the sea-rise threat. One of the Task forces says that there will be "a two-foot rise by the year 2100." The United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change wrote a 218-page academy report stating that " 60,000 miles of costal highways are already subject to periodic flooding." Another 800-page draft focuses on the area from Montauk Point on Long Island to Cape Lookout, N.C. The report gives three different possible sea-rise levels by the year 2100. It could be 16 inches, two feet, or up to three feet, this would be a terrible situation. Another area focused on in their reports is the Gulf Coast, which has a history of storm damage from hurricans Katrina and Rita. "Transportation planners there have not looked "far enough into the future to adequately plan for impacts on transportation systems resulting from the natural environment and climate change." What will happen in the future?

  30. No, I do not think the United States has done enough to protect its infrastructure because studies show 60,000 miles of highways are an area of interest to flooding on the coast. The problem is that it willt ake billions of dollars to protect coasts and it will take decades but we need to act now because if we do not it will be too late andcoasts will be flooded because of global warming. If we don't protect coasts and try to stop global warming by 2100 the sea will have risen two feet.
